What is an Armpit Detox…And Why Do You Need One?

Madeline: Posted 24/03/2017

Although it’s probably not the most talked about subject, I’ve recently discovered some pretty amazing benefits regarding detoxing your armpits. And while this might sound a little silly, there’s actually some very amazing benefits to giving your pits a regular detox.

You might be wondering why in the world a person would ever want to detox their armpits. Why not just wear deodorant every day and go about your business? The truth is, conventional deodorant is full of harmful chemicals that can be seriously damaging to your health. You’re paying a hefty price to keep stinky sweat away. Check out the (long) list of chemicals lurking in most deodorants found on the market today.

° Aluminum

Linked to Alzheimer’s disease and some cancers

° Parabens

A hormone disruptor that has been found in breast cancer tissue

° Phthalates

Known endocrine disruptors that can cause infertility issues and hormone imbalance

° Antibacterial Agents

Known endocrine disruptors that can have an adverse effect on a person’s immunity

° Formaldehyde

A well-known carcinogen that is added to a variety of personal care products

If that’s not enough to get you to rethink the deodorant or antiperspirant you’re using, check out what the National Cancer Institute has to say:

“Aluminum-based compounds are used as the active ingredient in antiperspirants. These compounds form a temporary plug within the sweat duct that stops the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface. Some research suggests that aluminum-based compounds, which are applied frequently and left on the skin near the breast, may be absorbed by the skin and cause estrogen-like (hormonal) effects. Because estrogen has the ability to promote the growth of breast cancer cells, some scientists have suggested that the aluminum-based compounds in antiperspirants may contribute to the development of breast cancer.”

Here’s another thing. The body is made to sweat. Sweating is the one of the natural ways the body expels toxins. When we block these sweat glands with chemically-laden products not only are we getting in the way of our body’s natural detoxification process, but also increasing the number of toxins in the body.

None of us want to sweat tooooo much though. This is where an armpit detox comes in as one of the most amazing natural remedies. For those of you who can’t seem to catch a break when it comes to sweaty pits, an armpit detox will have you sweating less in no time. Once you’ve done a detox, it’s smart to make the switch to natural deodorant. Not only will you rid your body of all those toxins, but you’ll be sure you’re not reintroducing all those chemicals back to the body that you just got rid of!

Why Do an Armpit Detox?

If you’ve been using conventional deodorant your entire life, detoxing the armpits is a great way to remove any lingering toxins in the armpit tissue and surrounding skin. Not only does an armpit detox help to expel toxins, but it’s amazing for experience less odor after you’re done. Armpit detox also equals less sweat.

How to Detox Your Pits

Doing an armpit detox is quick and easy. All you need is a few simple ingredients (that you might already have at home).

° 1 Tablespoon Bentonite Clay

° 1 Teaspoon Apple Cider Vinegar

° 1-2 Teaspoons Water

Mix all ingredients in a glass bowl until it is the texture of sour cream.

Spread an even layer over the armpits and allow it to sit for 5-20 minutes.

Rinse with warm water.

Repeat this daily (or a few times a week) as needed until your pits no longer stink without deodorant.

After I did this armpit detox, I noticed my pits were a bit…ripe…for a couple days. I’m sure this was my body getting rid of the unwanted toxins stored in my pits, but it did come as a bit of a surprise. This was also after having my 2nd child. My hormones seem a bit off. You may have a different experience.

A Few Things to Remember…

A healthy diet will also keep your pits healthy and toxin-free. After you’ve done the detox, be sure you’re drinking plenty of water and staying away from the foods that will stink up your pits. Caffeine, alcohol, fried foods, and pork are all responsible for making the armpits smell worse than they should.

Taking care of your armpits the natural way will also help tremendously with excess sweat and odor. Consider lemon, apple cider vinegar, or witch hazel after each shower. All you need to do is put any one of these ingredients on a cotton ball and apply to freshly dried pits after you shower. Let your armpits air dry and apply natural deodorant as desired.
