Were you aware that there are over 300 different types of honey in the U.S. alone? Crazy, right? Each one has their own distinct flavor and color depending upon the blossoms the honeybee visited. Honey truly is one of nature’s sweetest gifts and offers a bounty of health benefits. Not only is honey an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, but it also can help prevent cancer and heart disease. It’s excellent for soothing a sore throat and can be the perfect natural remedy to get rid of a cough.
The two most common varieties of honey are undoubtedly alfalfa and clover. Other types of honey you might not be as familiar with include:
° Avocado (rich caramel molasses flavor)
° Orange Blossom (sweet and fruity)
° Eucalyptus (slightly sweet herbal notes)
° Fireweed (delicate tea-like hints of flavor)
° Buckwheat (malty flavor and pungent aroma)
° Blueberry (slight fruity flavor with a soft aftertaste)
Manuka honey is a product of New Zealand honeybees, taken from the bees that fancy the Manuka bush. Not only does Manuka honey contain all the health benefits found in other honey varieties, but also has a special composition of extra healing benefits unique unto itself. Manuka honey outshines other types of honey for quite a few different reasons. Once you realize just how fabulous this extremely special honey is for the health of you and your family, I’m sure you’ll start keeping a jar on stock at all times!
All honey is a fabulous gift. The high concentration of nutrients it contains is unsurpassed when it comes to naturally staying healthy. The nutritional content of honey includes the following eleven vitamins and minerals:
Were you aware that honey was so healthy for you? Get this. Manuka honey contains all the benefits of regular honey, but more than doubled. Honey made pollinated from the manuka bush is four times that of any other variety of honey you can find.
This ultra-concentrated nutritional makeup is known as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) and is something that truly separates this honey from all the rest. UMF is the global standard for detecting and measuring the antibacterial strength of the honey. It also assures that it’s of medicinal quality.
In Manuka honey, there is a much higher concentrate of enzymes compared to other types of honey. This rich enzyme content produces a natural hydrogen peroxide and is also abundant in methylglyoxal and dihydroxyacetone. It is these three anti-bacterial agents that account for the medicinal quality this honey contains.
UMF Manuka has its own UMF antibacterial property as well as natural hydrogen peroxide that is found in regular honey. The power of UMF Manuka honey is enhanced significantly because of this.
A UMF level of 10+ is considered beneficial to health. When purchasing Manuka honey, you’ll find products from UMF10-UMF15 to be excellent for your health. Anything below UMF10 is considered subpar, while anything about UMF16 is considered to be superior grade.
When looking for Manuka honey, you might also find a MGO rating. This is used only by New Zealand Health, Ltd., and rates the level of methylglyoxal that is present in the honey. UMF and MGO simply measure the strength of Manuka honey in different ways.
Aside from all the health benefits regular honey contains, Manuka honey has some health benefits unique to itself. Some of my favorites include:
° Heals Cuts and Wounds
All honey is known to improve wound healing. With its unique composition however, Manuka honey can encourage faster healing time.
° Better Sleep
For those who have trouble sleeping, Manuka honey might become your new favorite nightcap. It helps with optimal function while sleeping, and when added to warm milk will aid the body’s release of melatonin.
° Beauty Tonic
Those who love looking beautiful naturally will love the addition of Manuka honey to their regular beauty routine. It has shown to improve skin texture and tone and is fabulous for your hair. And consuming Manuka honey will make you glow from the inside out.
° Soothes Sore Throats
Almost everyone knows how amazing honey is for getting rid of a sore throat. Manuka honey however, takes it a step further. One study showed that it stops the growth of strep throat. It was also recently approved by the National Cancer Institute to help heal inflammation in the throat caused by chemotherapy.
° Reduces Tooth Decay and Gingivitis
People suffering from a toothache will be happy to know that Manuka honey has shown to actually completely cure periodontal disease and gingivitis. Studies have shown Manuka honey reduces plaque and helps significantly with bleeding gums associated with gingivitis.
° Clears Acne and Eczema
While no clinical studies have been conducted on the positive effects of using Manuka honey for acne and eczema, those who have used it for these skin issues have nothing but great things to say. Try using just a bit on affected areas for a few minutes and then washing with soap and water. You should quickly notice a difference in the health of your skin.
Once I discovered all the awesome benefits of Manuka honey, it became a go-to for many different health concerns in my life. From scraped knees and sore throats to keeping my skin glowing gorgeously, Manuka honey is truly one of my favorite natural remedies. I’m also convinced it’s one of the sweetest ways to keep me and my family as healthy as we can be.
