How to Keep Your Immune System Strong and Fight a Cold or the Flu

Madeline: Posted 10/02/2015

There is nothing worse than getting sick and being stuck in bed for a few days, especially since the sickness can disrupt your work schedule and responsibilities at home. If you are starting to feel a scratchy throat or you feel like you might be coming down with something, then it is important to take immediate action to stop the illness before it sets in.

When it comes to natural remedies, it is best to use them as soon as possible, because you will have an easier time stopping the illness if you take action before the illness gets worse. Here are a few things that will boost your immune system and help you to fight off the bug:

Organic Chicken or Bone Broth

There is a reason why people often turn to chicken noodle soup when they are sick: organic bone broth contains powerful immune-boosting properties that can help you fight a cold or the flu. Make sure that the broth is made from organic, grass-fed bones, and you can make it at home buy gently simmering the bones in water. As a last resort if you don’t have organic bones to make a broth, I like organic bone broth by Pacific.

To make homemade bone broth, the bones must be simmered for 24 hours at a low temperature. I like to add things, like 2 tablespoons of Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother, stalks of celery, onions, carrots, garlic cloves, dill seeds, and cilantro. The long cooking time is important to release all of the important nutrients from the bones, and it is best to avoid letting it get hot enough to boil.  I personally like using the Crockpot. The broth provides your body with vitamins and nutrients that are immediately ready to be used, and the healing properties replenish and nourish the body to overcome sickness.

Manuka Honey

Honey is a tasty treat, and it is also an effective natural remedy. Manuka honey is collected from honey bees in New Zealand who forage the manuka bushes. This honey has healing properties: stomach-soothing, antiseptic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial. It’s important to understand manuka honey’s rating system. UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor. It is a quality trademark identifying natural unadulterated manuka honey that has a special unique natural non-peroxide antibacterial activity found only in some strains of manuka honey.

Research experts recommend using honey with an activity rating of 10+ or more. Therefore, if you are looking for immediate medicinal use or preventative use, choose Active Manuka with a UMF of  10+, 15+, or 20+. Take a teaspoon every 2-3 hours until you find your symptoms cease. Make sure that you buy raw honey as well, and eat it daily for immune support.

Elderberry Syrup

For prevention, you should be taking one tablespoon of elderberry syrup daily, and you can double or triple your use of this natural remedy when you are sick. It’s suggested you take two tablespoons every 3 hours when feeling under the weather to help your body naturally fight off the bug. You can make homemade elderberry syrup, or you can get a pre-packaged organic kit HERE. I have made this kit for my family by Berry Good Organics and it’s super easy to make. You can choose to add raw honey or manuka honey. Personally, I like using manuka.

Essential Oils

If you are looking for a powerful way to quickly boost your immune system and knock out an illness, then you should reach for your bottles of essential oil. Some of the most effective essential oilsfor immune support include: oregano, tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus, thyme and lemon.

Use the essential oils topically, diluted with almond or coconut oil. Or, you can add essential oils in a diffuser to enjoy the aromatic benefits of the oils. When it comes to essential oils, the best method is to use a small amount frequently throughout the day. They are very potent, and a little bit can go a long way.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is very beneficial for immune support, and it can be used daily to promote healthy digestion. The natural fermentation in the apple cider vinegar supports the flora balance in your gut, which in turn strengthens the immune system. For an extra immune boost, make a drink with water, apple cider vinegar, honey, cinnamon, and ginger.

Make sure to buy a high quality brand, such as Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar, because the cheaper brands have been highly processed which removes the health benefits that are in the natural vinegar. When you look at the bottom of the bottle, you will see that there is some settling on the bottom, so you should shake the bottle before adding a teaspoon to your drink.

Herbal Tea

Gaia’s Essence makes a powerful herbal tea that is beneficial for immune support called Rhoobis Tea. Drink this tea daily as a preventive step, or increase your use of it if you are starting to get sick. Rhoobis Tea originates in South Africa, where it has been used for years as a natural remedy. It is now available all over the world, and it is a good source of vitamin C and important minerals that can boost your health.

Colloidal Silver

Sometimes called silver “antibiotics,” colloidal silver is a great way to knock out an illness and start feeling better. You can buy colloidal silveronline or at your local health food store, just make sure that it is a trustworthy, high quality brand. Different brands have differing dosage recommendations, so read the label to determine how much you should be taking each day. If you feel like you are getting sick, use colloidal silver 3 or 4 times each day.
