How Plastic Toys Could be Damaging Your Family’s Health

Have you ever stopped to think about the amount of plastic spilling out of your kids toy box?

Never-mind the quantity, but quality is an issue here too…

As a man-made material, plastic is full of potential nasties that could be harming the health of our little ones.

In fact, ingesting the chemical found in plastics, as well as just being EXPOSED to them is ‘linked with severe adverse health outcomes such as cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive effects’.

The Problem With Plastic

Many toys on the market are made of plastic, so it’s important that we educate ourselves on the dangers of the items that are children are ultimately going to be playing with, and let’s face it, putting in their mouths.

Research around plastic toys is alarming to say the least…

A 2007 study found that of the 111 plastic based toys tested ALL of them had traces of cadmium and lead. This is extremely worrying as scientists have determined that no amount of cadmium or lead in the body is safe – in fact, they’re known poisons.

Lead has been linked to cognitive impairment in children, as well as fine motor dysfunction. Cadmium can have serious consequences on our children’s learning, with a 2011 study finding that children ‘exposed to cadmium were three times more likely to have learning disabilities’. Not only that, but cadmium is also linked to kidney diseases and cancers!

It doesn’t stop there…

Phthalates are a more commonly heard word when it comes to plastics and that’s because they are used A LOT. If you’re wondering what baby and children’s products you have in your home that might have phthalates lurking in them, think teethers, inflatables and soft figures. All of these could be causing havoc on the reproductive systems of both your little ones and yourself.

Plastic Has Had a Makeover

Savvy brands, who are aware of the dangers that plastics pose, are making a conscious shift to bioplastics. These are made either entirely, or partially, of completely natural materials, such as sugarcane and corn maize.

Not only is this good news for the well-being of our families, but it’s also making the planet happier too!

100% Bioplastics are completely plant-based. Absolutely no oil is present in these types of plastic at all, meaning they contribute much less to carbon emissions. On an industrial scale they are also able to be composted, therefore less plastic contributing to landfill! Supporting companies that have a strong eco-friendly stance goes towards combating the climate change problem.

Bioserie Cares About Your Children

Plastic is very versatile and is often a preferred material to manufacture toys with. That’s because it’s hard to break, light and all-round durable. However, as parents we are often put in a compromising decision when deciding whether to purchase the many popular plastic toys on the market. It’s often a pay off between convenience and health.

However, Bioserie are saying goodbye to these dilemmas with their range of bioplastic toys. This environmentally friendly brand started producing children’s toys in 2014. They now stock 6 different toys in total, making sure to take time and care to manufacture the most safe and suitable products.

However, Bioserie have not compromised on fun and creativity. Their products are bright and colorful (thanks to organic colourants) and are designed to help your little ones grow and learn.

All the products are made with 100% bioplastics, which is no mean feat. In fact, they are the first company to be awarded with the USDA’s 100% biobased certification – meaning absolutely no petrochemicals whatsoever!

Impressive, considering even one of the world’s biggest producer of toys, LEGO, is still using petrochemicals to manufacture it’s well-loved bricks.

Bioserie is Made Safe

The ‘Made Safe’ seal is like a comfort blanket for us eco-warriors. If you like to be completely reassured that the products you’re buying aren’t going to harm yours, or your family’s health, then you’ll want to look out for this certification.

It means that Bioserie toys are toxin-free and made with completely safe ingredients. In fact it means there’s none of the following nasties:

  • Behavioral Toxins
  • Carcinogens
  • Developmental Toxins
  • Endocrine Disruptors
  • Fire Retardants
  • GMOs
  • Heavy Metals
  • Neurotoxins
  • High Risk Pesticides
  • Reproductive Toxins
  • Toxic Solvents
  • Harmful VOCs

Phew! That’s a long list, but sadly many of these harmful substances can be found in a wide range of household goods.

Bioserie’s Made Safe seal means it’s an approved brand we’re happy to support and have in our home, joining some of our other favourite Made Safe approved brands, Natracare and Pleni Naturals.

One of our favorite toys that Bioserie stocks is the ‘Shape Sorting and Stacking Cube’. This bright and interactive toy is perfect for babies 6 months and up to refine cognitive and fine motor skills. My daughter has been absolutely loving this toy and at only $21.99 this is one health-friendly steal!

In fact, all the toys in the line are great as they all have the following benefits:

  • Made Safe seal of approval
  • Free from many harmful chemicals and toxins

  • USDA 100% biobased certified
  • Environmentally friendly

Make Conscious Purchases

Spending your money with companies that you believe in is the best way to promote change. I truly believe that voting with our dollars is essentially the way to see that change we want to see.  Typical plastic toys are cheap and easy to get hold of, meaning a great deal of children worldwide are being exposed to the dangers lurking within these toys.

By supporting Bioserie, and other forward thinking eco-brands, you are helping to increase consumer awareness. Hey, why stop there, tell all your friends, families and anyone else that will listen. If you believe in living a healthy life that also benefits the planet, then spread that message!

In fact, sharing this article on social media is a sure-fire way to start those important conversations.
