Could Parasites be the Cause of Your Health Problems?

Madeline: Posted 19/04/2018

Feel like something is literally eating away at you?

Surely it’s not parasites, as they’re a developing world thing, right?

Once only considered a problem for under-developed countries, parasites could actually be wreaking havoc on your health and wellbeing.

These organisms get into our systems, feeding off of us in order to survive. We could actually be hosting parasites who are using our bodies as a place to live, feed and lay eggs!

Parasitic Problems

Unfortunately, there’s an increasing amount of people suffering from parasites and an alarmingly high number of people who are walking around undiagnosed! In fact, it’s estimated that around 50% of the western world population will experience a parasite problem in their lifetime!

Being exposed to the poor hygiene of others (e.g. not washing hands after using the bathroom) and undercooked meats are two of the more commonly reported ways that parasites are sneaking their way into our systems. In fact, some even get in through contact lenses washed with tap water and the bottom of our feet!

We need to be concerned about parasites due to the whole host of health problems they pose. By making home in our intestines, parasites feed off our nutrition, interrupting our gut function as well as causing hormonal imbalances.

Signs and Symptoms

Your body might be trying to warn you of a parasite problem without you necessarily realizing it. These symptoms aren’t unusual and strange, but they can signal a hidden intestinal organism…

  • Unexplained bloating, gas, diarrhea or other IBS
  • Skin bumps or rashes
  • Abdominal pain
  • Sleep problems
  • Muscle and joint aches and pains
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety and/or depression
  • Grinding teeth in sleep
  • Allergies

These are just some of the symptoms that may present themselves in the event of a parasite. However, it’s important to note that in some cases there are little to no symptoms present, making it extremely difficult to diagnose a parasite problem.

Getting Diagnosed

If you suspect you have a parasite infection, or something feels off, then you must consult with your FUNCTIONAL medicine doctor.

Functional medicine ‘is a systems biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease’. Often conventional medicine treats the symptoms, without searching for where these originate from.

The reason ‘functional’ is stressed is because unfortunately many conventional doctors dismiss parasites as the root of the problem. In fact, conventional testing often means clear indicators of a problem are completely overlooked. Just take a read of this eye-opening article here, all about the diagnosis discrepancies between a functional medicine doctor’s approach vs. conventional doctor’s approach, with the EXACT same set of blood work!

It’s also important to note that functional doctors take a different testing approach compared to conventional doctors. The functional medicine tests are often more comprehensive and are more likely to identify parasites, which can be difficult to identify due to their cycles of activity and dormancy.

It can be easy to feel like you’re crazy, going round and round in circles seeing doctors to be told that nothing is wrong. Fortunately, functional medicine is tuned in to looking more closely and investigating deeper into problems that you are experiencing.

Solving a Parasite Problem

By working under the guidance of a functional medicine doctor there are a few ways you can naturally expel the parasites from your body.

  • Diet Detox

Overhauling your diet is often the first step in treating many gut related problems. Many people have had great success by simply removing a few foods and incorporating healthy ones that can help parasites pass out of the system.

The foods to avoid are pork, grains, processed foods, alcohol and sugar. It’s important to avoid sugar, and sugar containing foods, as these feed the parasites. Pork is also one of the most common sources of parasites.

In order to boost the function of your immune system and remove parasites there are a few key foods to start incorporating. These are: coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic, cinnamon, vitamin C and diatomaceous earth – read more about these here. However, if you follow Medical Medium, he would suggest staying away from diatomaceous earth.

Traditionally, pumpkin seeds have also been used to treat parasites. ‘It is believed the high levels of compounds known as cucurbitins paralyze the worms. This prevents them from holding on to the intestinal walls, as they usually do during a bowel movement.’ If you’re interested in following a pumpkin seed cleanse, then I recommend this simple guide here.

  • Herbal Supplementation

Using specially selected herbs is a great way to treat parasites that are hard to pinpoint. ‘In general, these herbal formulas provide a broad spectrum of activity against the most common pathogens present in the human GI tract, while sparing the beneficial gut bacteria.

If you’re wondering which herbs are beneficial, wormwood is one of the most cited. There are many wonderful herbs that can be used in conjunction to kill parasites naturally. A particular product I am currently using is made by Apex Energetics.

  • Coffee Enema

It is well known that enemas are a great way to rid yourself of toxins and other built-up nasties. Coffee enemas are in fact a great way to flush out parasites.

Coffee is known to detox the liver and when delivered in enema form, none of the toxins, that we usually have to be wary of, present a problem to the body. By performing coffee enemas, you can flush parasites out of the body and make your gut less hospitable for them, as coffee raises the alkalinity of the small intestine.

  • Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is incredibly porous, meaning it’s used to rid the body of toxins due to its ability to attract and hold them in water-based environments. It’s so highly regarded for its detoxing capabilities that it has been used for healing purposes for over 3,000 years. It’s the perfect substance to remove parasites from the body, as it’s cleanses the intestines without disrupting the mucus lining.

It’s important to note that while people have had great success with some of these remedies, only certain ones might work for you – that’s why it’s important to work under the guidance of a professional.

If you think you have parasites it’s vital you get to work as soon as possible to rid your body of them as they are incredibly resilient and leaving them be will allow them to cause havoc on your body and immune system.

If you are going through a parasite cleanse you might feel nauseous, feverish and constipated. This is completely normal, but is something you should be aware of. As your body is expelling these nasty organisms, die-off symptoms can occur which aren’t pleasant! Persevere, look after yourself and try some of these natural remedies to cope with these symptoms, such as epsom salt baths and green smoothies.
